The Anatomy of a Penis
The penis is truly a wonder of human engineering. The ability for the organ to be flaccid and soft and then to become hard and ready for reproduction is an amazing accomplishment. Let’s take a closer look at what the penis is made of inside.
The penis is essentially made up of three separate compartments of spongy tissue that, when soft is empty and flexible and when sexual arousal or stimulation (like “morning wood”) causes the chambers to fill with blood, the tissue to expand and an erection is possible. There is no limit to the number of erections a man can have in a lifetime, but there is a condition that can be very dangerous when a man has an erection for a long period of time (usually more than four hours) that can lead to problems with blood pressure or even a heart attack.
At the tip of the penis is the gland or “head” of the penis. The gland is where most of the sensation that men experience during sex is located. The gland can be extremely sensitive to even the lightest touch. For men that have a condition called phimosis, which is when the foreskin is so restrictive that it can’t be pulled back over the head, the gland essentially becomes an internal organ that isn’t even exposed to air. For these men, the condition is extremely painful and if the foreskin is forced back, the gland can’t even be touched or extreme pain will result.
The tube within the penis that carries urine as well as semen is called the urethra. During sex, the pathway from the bladder to the penis is closed off allowing the semen from the testicles to flow up and, eventually, out of the penis.
Most men have a ridge on the underside of the penis. This ridge is called the raphe and it separates out two of the three spongy chambers within the penis. On some men, this ridge is very pronounced, giving the penis a flattened look, while on others, it is almost invisible, giving the penis a more rounded look when hard.
The engineering of the penis is quite amazing. Unlike many other mammals that have an actual bone in their penis, humans do not. They rely completely on tissue and the pump system that gives men an erection. Without it, the human species wouldn’t be able to reproduce.
