Causes and History of Peyronie's Disease
Peyronie’s disease is a medical condition that is thought to effect up to one percent of all men in the United States. The disease is caused by a build up in scar tissue in the penis that leads to an extreme curve developing that causes the penis to point to one side in an extremely over-exaggerated way.
Please note that almost ALL men have some curve to their penis. This is actually normal. Most men notice this at a young age that when they get an erection, their penis isn’t completely straight, even though their sexual orientation might be. Mild to moderate curve is completely normal with the penis. Peyronie’s Disease is an extreme curve that can cause problems with urination, intercourse and erectile dysfunction.
Peyronie’s Disease can be caused by several things. First of all, it has been seen in young boys and men, which shows that it can actually be inherited. Most cases of Peyronie’s Disease, however, are not had from birth. The main cause of the disease is blunt trauma to the penis itself. What essentially happens is scar tissue begins to form in the penis after a traumatic event, and as the scar tissue hardens, it begins to cause the penis to bend. It can also cause long, hard lines of tissue in the penis, as well as hard knobs or bumps on the shaft.
Unlike the rest of the penis, which is made up of soft, spongy-like tissue, the scar tissue is hard and unbendable, which is why it has such a traumatic effect on the penis when it forms. Most men simply experience a bend in the penis that while may be embarrassing, it doesn’t cause the penis to function any differently. In extreme cases, the bend is so pronounced, there is extreme erectile dysfunction and an almost complete inability for sexual intercourse due to obvious logistical problems.
The biggest impact of the disease isn’t physical, but more mental. Men perceive themselves as “broken” and it can cause a crash in the amount of self-confidence they have. While Peyronie’s Disease is obviously a physical ailment, the psychological effects are even more devastating.
Peyronie’s disease only effects a small percentage of the population, but the impact for those that do have it can be huge. While a good number of men who have it still go on and have a satisfying sex life, the sheer embarrassment of Peyronie’s Disease can render thousands of men celibate every year due to sheer embarrassment.
